Why Blue Cross Of California Is Still A Good Choice

By Daniel Abrams

With all the changes happening in the world of medical insurance, blue cross of California has remained one of the strongest carriers. Their plan portfolio is plentiful, although not overwhelming. They've also got the best capability to negotiate low rates for medical procedures, helping to keep their members out of pocket exposure to the minimum. They also have an extensive member website granting the ability to research claims, compare costs for medical procedures, and offer programs and resources helping members stay as healthy as possible.

Blue Cross of California, now known as Anthem Blue Cross, has taken a lot of heat over time. They regularly are the scapegoats for wrongdoings that all insurance carriers are guilty of. As an example, when the Department of Managed HealthCare slapped the wrists of insurance firms for rescinding health policies of critically ill members, of which 100% were rejected for having no legal leg to stand on, blue cross of California was the one named in all the stories headlines. They also bore the brunt of being the "bad men" when it came to raising rates, as their name was always at the top of the page of each reports site. While everyone knows that insurance carriers are indeed gigantic businesses, and built to make profit, it did seem that Anthem Blue Cross of California was looking like the worst choice for health insurance California.

But history demonstrates that all carriers occasionally adjust their rates, change their plan portfolio, and may offer resistance covering certain claims. Nevertheless it's really important as a member of blue cross of California or any carrier to understand that you do have a voice. In reality member voices are the rationale that many rate hikes were reduced or cancelled altogether. Additionally, members talking out were the reason behind class action suits (i.e. Feller/Freed) against blue cross California and helped members keep flexibility to move to more cost effective and/or more comprehensive plans instead of being locked in to a plan with unending rate hikes.

Health Insurance California remains a hard place, as insurance carriers remain ready to reject cover for pre-existing conditions. Until medical care reform happens, California can medically guarantee any person above the age of 18, and establish irrespective of whether or not they are too risky to insure. If someone seems like they might cost more in hospital treatment than in premium, they may have to look some place else.

Other states do offer coverage on a warranted basis, and their higher premiums show it. Will this mean that health insurance California plans cost more once January 2014 rolls around? Most likely, though we shall all must wait and see.
